Manufacturer LG Electronics Inc. has added eBay Inc.’s PayPal online payment service to its Smart TVs, it says. Smart TVs are connected to the Internet to enable streaming content, web browsing and e-commerce, among other online tasks. Shoppers can use the payment service by signing into their PayPal accounts to access saved account information or enter new billing details with their remote controls.

“PayPal significantly reduces the number of steps the user has to take in order to complete a transaction, saving them time by eliminating the need to enter credit card and address details for each subsequent purchase,” says Richard Choi, senior vice president of the Smart Business Center at LG. “Moving forward, it will also make it possible for LG to better integrate digital commerce with first-class home entertainment.”

For now, LG Smart TV owners can use PayPal to buy apps or games, for $0.99 to $6.00, or 3D movies, for $4.59 to $7.99, says Matthew Durgin, director, Smart TV content, LG Electronics USA.

Eventually the payments service will open up to additional uses, according to the PayPal blog. “This new functionality is welcome news to charities and advertisers looking to engage a whole new audience at a time when they’re receptive to donate or purchase,” writes Randall Davies, senior director of global business development at PayPal “We believe the television is a natural outlet for commerce and we’re excited about bringing the ease, security and functionality of PayPal to this new experience.”

The payments option is already available on 2013 LG Smart TVs for consumers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, LG says. It will continue rolling out on new Smart TVs in other countries, starting this month with France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia, the company says.

LG selected PayPal because it’s trusted in online transactions, Durgin says. The company is expanding the payment options on its Smart TVs, he says, but doesn’t yet have any other new additions to announce. There are 123 million active users of PayPal worldwide, according to PayPal, which is part of eBay Inc.
