The aggregator will optimize its site for smartphones.

For the first time in its five-year history, Free Shipping Day will optimize its web site for viewing on smartphones. On Dec. 17, consumers who type FreeShippingDay.com into a mobile web browser will be automatically redirected to the mobile-optimized version of the aggregator’s site.

Free Shipping Day is a one-day shopping event during which participating merchants offer free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve. The fifth annual event is scheduled this year for Monday, Dec. 17. As of today 1,021 merchants are participating in the event, with more to come, a Free Shipping Day spokesman says.

Free Shipping Day points to a recent IBM survey as inspiration behind its mobile move. The survey revealed that 17% of shoppers use their mobile devices to check out deals, a 70% increase over last year.

“Each year we try to provide shoppers with something better than the year before,” says Free Shipping Day founder Luke Knowles. “When we saw how many people want to use their mobile device to find deals, it was a no-brainer to create a mobile version.”

In addition to improving mobile accessibility, Knowles has also been observing improved offers. “Free shipping with a minimum order has become a common promotion, but we’re seeing more offers that include free shipping with no minimum, plus an extra discount,” he says.

While the offers aren’t officially revealed until 12 a.m. Eastern time on Dec. 17, consumers can preview participants beforehand by visiting FreeShippingDay.com.
