The web retailer sells hotel and resort packages, but no airline tickets.

Overstock.com Inc. today became the latest e-commerce operator to offer online travel deals.

The packages, which include hotel and resort stays but not flights, generally will remain on sale for two weeks, typically longer than travel deals offered on daily-deal and flash-sale sites, says Jonathan Johnson, president of Overstock, No. 28 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

“Overstock.com is really turning into a savings engine, and we want to do anything we can to provide our customers a good deal,” he says. For its new travel offering, the retailer has shied away from airfares and all of its complexities. “We’re not getting into the airline business. It’s a difficult business,” Johnson says.

Deals offered today at Vacations.overstock.com include a two-night stay in San Diego for $289, a three-night stay in Buenos Aires for $133 and a week-long vacation in Hollywood for $363. Overstock plans to offer between 30 and 40 deals at any one time, Johnson says. He adds that Overstock is working with Rovia LLC to find and process the travel package offers.
