Snapshot: How online education supply retailers fared last year

Back-to-school season is here and the nine retailers in the Internet Retailer 2019 Top 1000 that sell educational products may see growth in online sales.

Families of Kindergarten through Grade 12 students will spend an average of roughly $700 throughout the academic year, which is $12 more than last year, according to the 2019 annual survey on school supply spending by the National Retail Federation, a retail trade association, and research group Prosper Insights and Analytics.

College students are expected to spend an average of roughly $980 throughout the academic year, up more than $30 from 2018, according to the report.

Online spending is also expected to increase, with 29% of shoppers’ spending budgets reserved specifically for ecommerce compared with 23% in 2018, according to Deloitte’s 2019 Back-to-School Shopping report.

The nine retailers in the Top 1000 that sell educational products, such as Lakeshore Learning (No. 254) and School Outfitters (No. 326), cumulatively sold $78 million online last year, Internet Retailer estimates. With a projected increase in spending for this school year, the nine Top 1000 merchants may see more growth online in 2019.
