The suburban Atlanta facility is the third such center Wal-Mart has opened since July.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. continued its e-commerce push as it preps for the holiday shopping season.

The retail chain, No. 3 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Top 500 Guide, opened a 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Union City, Ga., about 17 miles southwest of Atlanta. The new facility will eventually employ 400 full-time workers.

“We’re rapidly enhancing our fulfillment capabilities to give customers more choices and fast shipping, while keeping our costs down so we can continue to lower our prices,” Wal-Mart CEO of global e-commerce Neil Ashe said.

This is the third e-commerce fulfillment facility Wal-Mart has opened in the second half of the year. In July, Wal-Mart opened a 1.2 million-square-foot facility in Bethlehem, Pa. Three weeks later, it opened a similar facility in Plainfield, Ind.

Last month, Wal-Mart announced plans to hire 60,000 seasonal in-store employees to keep up with the holiday demand, as well as an unspecified number of additional holiday help in its e-commerce fulfillment centers.
