São Paulo, Brazil—Amazon.com Inc. plans to expand its e-commerce site in Brazil to sell printed books, sources tell Internet Retailer. Amazon.com.br currently only sells Amazon’s Kindle electronic book readers and e-books that can be read on the Kindle.
The sources say Amazon expects to ship 4,000 to 10,000 parcels a day once it adds the printed volumes in the next few weeks. Even if it only sells 4,000 books a day at $10 each, that would add about $15 million a year to Amazon’s sales in Brazil.
Amazon is No. 11 in Internet Retailer’s Latin America 400, with estimates sales of $320 million in 2012. A new edition of the Latin America guide, this time ranking 500 retailers in the region, will be out this summer.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Amazon launched its e-commerce site in Brazil in 2012. The e-retailer, No. 1 in the Top 500, which ranks North American retailers by online sales, operates e-commerce sites in 13 countries.
