Users who download the 12 Days Of Gifts app will receive a free paid app, song, movie or e-book each day Dec. 26 through Jan. 6. But consumers only have 24 hours to snag each gift.

Odds are most iPhone and iPad owners have little use for eight maids-a-milking or a partridge in a pear tree. So Apple Inc. instead is being a bit more practical, celebrating the 12 days of Christmas by giving away free digital content to consumers who own its iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch mobile devices.

Consumers on iOS devices download Apple’s 12 Days Of Gifts mobile app. When they first open the app, they are prompted to allow push notifications. Those who OK push messages will receive notes advising them a new gift is available. Consumers have 24 hours to download via the app each day’s gift, which will include free paid apps, songs, movies and e-books.

Apple previously offered this promotion in Canada and Europe. This is the first year Apple is offering it in the U.S. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

The 12 Days Of Gifts app is available now in the Apple App Store. Apple is No. 1 in the 2014 Internet Retailer Mobile 500. Apple said in September that it has sold 700 million iOS devices. It debuted the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in September and the new iPad Air in November.
