Payments technology and services company Intuit Inc. has purchased mobile checkout vendor AisleBuyer for an undisclosed sum. Intuit plans on bringing the development teams and expertise of the two companies together to create new in-store mobile commerce services for small businesses.

“We are in a fast-moving, ever-changing mobile payments space,” writes Melissa Tahan, marketing manager for Intuit’s payments solutions group, on the Intuit blog. “By leveraging AisleBuyer’s technology and talent, together we will bring added value to Intuit’s mobile payment and point-of-sale offerings, including GoPayment. In particular, AisleBuyer’s technology opens up the mobile point-of-sale ecosystem to our internal and third-party developers, and together we’ll be able to deliver innovative offerings to our small business customers.”

Intuit’s GoPayment technology allows small businesses to accept payments on an iPhone or Android smartphone. Intuit provides a small piece of hardware that connects to a smartphone through the audio jack and works in conjunction with an app to accept payments. Intuit also offers payment processing services.

The AisleBuyer app connects to a retailer’s point-of-sale system and enables customers to scan items with their smartphones, adding the items to a shopping cart. After setting up an account with payment card information, customers can check out themselves, avoiding lines at cash registers.
