Online Marketplaces Database
Last year marked a watershed for ecommerce. For the first time, the world’s online marketplaces, the shopping malls of ecommerce, sold more merchandise than all stand-alone retail web sites combined. Largely ignored until five years ago, the marketplaces accounted for 52% of global ecommerce sales in 2018, according to Internet Retailer’s 2019 Top 100 Online Marketplaces Database, which ranks and analyzes the world’s 100 largest web marketplaces based on their projected 2018 online sales. Together, these marketplaces racked up $1.8 trillion in online sales last year, up 23% from 2017, faster than the 18% growth rate achieved by the global e-retailing industry.
