E-commerce’s influence is much greater than its 20% share of the retailer’s business, CEO Jay Schottenstein said in May 2016. He said the retailer’s digital investments “not only drive e-commerce sales but ultimately drive customer loyalty and sales across our brands.” During its first fiscal quarter of 2016, e-commerce accounted for roughly 30% of American Eagle Outfitters’ Aerie business, which sells lingerie and intimate apparel. In late 2015 acquired online clothing retailer Tailgate Clothing Co. for $11 million in cash and stock. Tailgate focuses primarily on vintage collegiate sports apparel, selling T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts through its website.
