E-commerce roundup: GNC’s new CEO hails from Rite Aid and Target hires for a new role

Health products retailer GNC Holdings Inc. has hired Ken Martindale as its new CEO.

Martindale joins GNC, No. 187 in the Internet Retailer 2017 Top 500, from drugstore chain Rite Aid Corp., where he was president of Rite Aid Corp. and CEO of Rite Aid Stores. Martindale takes over for interim CEO Bob Moran, who was named to the position following the departure of Michael Archbold.

“Ken is a proven leader with deep retail expertise, intimate knowledge of our business through his years of leadership with our partner, Rite Aid, and a record of success in transforming retail business models,” says GNC board chairman Michael Hines.

In July, GNC reported that online sales declined 5.2% year over year for the first six months of its fiscal 2017, while total sales fell 4.7% year over year. At the end of 2016, GNC unveiled a new pricing initiative called One New GNC, in which the retailer offers the same price on products whether they’re sold online or offline.
