A healthcare ecommerce company raises $30 million to go national

A healthcare technology company that is taking an ecommerce and retail approach to opening and running patient walk-in clinics has raised $30 million to expand operations.

Carbon Health, which opens and operates walk-in clinics using a mix of retail, mobile and ecommerce technology—and usually by partnering with big healthcare systems—will use the new funding to expand operations beyond its base in California, the company says.

“The healthcare industry is on the verge of a major transition and we are leading the charge of what the future of healthcare will look like,” says CEO Eren Bali.

With the Carbon Health app, patients can manage appointments, make payments, access their medical records and lab results, fill prescriptions and interact with doctors online.

Patients of Carbon Health’s walk-in clinics can access doctors through a mobile app as well as in-person at its clinic in downtown San Francisco. Carbon Health currently operates clinics in California with NorthBay Healthcare and El Camino Health and since 2017 has served over 100,000 patients and completed.

Carbon Health, which merged with Direct Urgent Care, a network of walk-in clinics, in October now has seven locations.

But the new round of $30 million in working funds, from a group of investors led by Brookfield Growth Partners, will help the company build a national network. “We plan to tap Brookfield’s significant retail and operational resources and build upon our partnerships with leading health systems and hospitals, to become a leading national brand,” Bali says.
