PetSmart acquired Chewy in 2017 to add an online presence to their store base. Chewy reported $3.5 billion in sales for fiscal 2018, up from $2.1 billion in 2017. Chewy has distinguished itself from it’s competitors and has become the go-to website for pet care. While Chewy seemingly monopolizes this online market, competitors like BarkBox are showing rapid growth and stealing share. BarkBox has differentiated itself by offering a comprehensive subscription service. Although Chewy posted strong online sales growth, BarkBox is increasing sales at a similar rate.
