Insights Podcast: Dr. Robert Pearl on what it will take to make health care better

Digital Commerce 360 Insights Podcasts

Dr. Robert Pearl knows the good, the bad, and the ugly of the U.S. healthcare system. He also knows if the right dose of digital, big data, artificial intelligence and other forms of advanced IT can keep the health system from coding.

In this episode, Dr. Pearl, the former CEO of Permanente Medical Group and a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, shares how digital and data technology can help transform–or at least improve–how health care is delivered and managed in this country. He also talks about digital technology’s contribution to improved treatments and outcomes for patients and the themes running through his recently published book, “Mistreated: Why We Think We’re Getting Good Health Care–and Why We’re Usually Wrong.

“30% of what we do in a medical office today easily can be done using video,” Pearl explains. “Patient convenience can go up, patients woudn’t have to miss work or school to go the doctor office nearly as frequently and the American health care system, rather than struggling with how are we going to ration care or how are we going to diminish care, or who’s not going to get care, can actually expand care at a more affordable rate. Every other industry has done and it. We have yet to make it happen.”
