Gander Mountain hires a new head of e-commerce

Outdoor gear and apparel retailer Gander Mountain is turning to now-defunct sporting goods retail chain Sports Authority’s chief marketing officer to head up its e-commerce efforts.

Gander Mountain, No. 213 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide, hired Ron Stoupa as its senior vice president of marketing and e-commerce. He will start Monday. In addition to his experience with Sports Authority, Stoupa has also worked in leadership roles for auto parts retailer Pep Boys (No. 152) and outdoor gear and accessories retailer Bass Pro Shops (No. 109).

Sports Authority, which was ranked No. 287 in the Top 500 with an Internet Retailer-estimated $85.8 million in online sales in 2015, filed for bankruptcy in March and subsequently liquidated its assets, including its online store.

Gander Mountain president Derek Siddons cited Stoupa’s years of experience working for multichannel retailers as a reason for bringing him on board.

“Ron’s extensive background in leading the development and marketing of major national brands, coupled with his unique experience in omnichannel development, customer segmentation and marketing analytics will enable him to drive continued growth at Gander Mountain,” Siddons says.

According to Top500Guide.com, Gander Mountain’s 2015 online sales totaled an Internet Retailer-estimated $133.3 million, up 5.0% from $127.0 million in 2014.
