Amazon starts selling print books in Brazil

Consumers in Brazil will now be able to order print books from Amazon.com Inc., the company announced today. Amazon began selling e-books in the country two years ago.

CEO Jeff Bezos says Amazon’s new service will offer more than 150,000 titles in Portuguese starting today.

Amazon’s e-book portfolio started with 13,000 titles in December 2012 and expanded today to more than 35,000 titles in Portuguese, with another two million titles in other languages. Amazon does not sell general merchandise on its Brazilian site, just e-books, e-readers and, now, print books.

In an announcement on Amazon.com.br, the company also announced a new program that allows customers to read the digital version of a title after ordering the print version. The program is called Read While Ship, and lets customers read the digital version until the print version arrives. More than 13,000 titles are eligible.

Earlier this year, sources told Internet Retailer Amazon expects to ship 4,000 to 10,000 parcels a day once it adds the printed volumes.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The e-retailer, No. 1 in the Top 500, which ranks North American retailers by online sales, operates e-commerce sites in 13 countries.

Brazil is Latin America’s biggest online retail market, and 248 of the merchants ranked in the Latin America 500 are based in the country.
