Online Easter shoppers plan to spend more than consumers heading for stores

Shoppers who turn to the web to stock up on chocolate eggs, bunny suits and holiday décor for Easter this year will spend on average $225.64 in total—64% more than the average for all Easter shoppers, $137.46, according to a new survey from Shop.org. In fact, online Easter shoppers will spend more on average in every category of goods, the survey says.

Shop.org is the e-commerce arm of trade group the National Retail Federation. It surveyed 6,837 U.S. adults online from March 4-11 about their Easter shopping plans.

Online Easter shoppers also plan to spend 25% more for the holiday this year, which falls on April 20, compared with last year, while all Easter shoppers will increase their spending by just 13.3%, the survey says.

Additionally, 12.2% of the survey respondents who own smartphones say they’ll use those devices to purchase Easter items this year, as will 19.2% of tablet owners.  More owners of both types of devices will use them to research Easter purchases, if not complete them, say 23.4% of smartphone owners and 30.2% of tablet owners.

As to what online Easter shoppers plan to buy, here is the breakdown by category of goods, with percentage of web-shopping respondents who plan to buy and their expected average spending:
