The pandemic drove consumers to shop more on retail websites and marketplaces that offer lots of products. Retailers responded in three ways: by selling more on marketplaces, creating their own marketplaces by inviting other merchants to sell on their sites, and by expanding selection through drop-shipping. Those tactics all work, but they require close coordination between companies to ensure a good customer experience. In 1965, Sportif USA was founded by my father John G. Kirsch in Southern California. In true entrepreneurial style, he sold tennis shorts from the back of the family’s station wagon, gradually building a reputation for quality and comfort.     Tennis shorts led to hiking, which led to fishing and nautical apparel… and so the Sportif brand took shape.  In the early 70’s the business was moved to the beautiful Sierra Nevada, where the blossoming clothing design and manufacturing business took root.    In a cruel twist of fate, my father John G. Kirsch’s twin-engine Beechcraft plane crashed in the snow-covered San Bernardino mountains on March 1, 1991. I was named president of the USA division of Sportif USA just 2 weeks prior to my father’s passing, I had just turned 24 years of age.  Along with several siblings we continued building the dream our father had spent 25 years of his life pursuing.  We are proud to celebrate 57 years of excellence as a family owned and operated business, never having taken any outside capital.
