Online retail sales in the United States increased 14.2% in 2018, according to an Internet Retailer analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Growth was in line with the average for the nine years since the end of the 2008-9 recession: From 2010 to 2018 online retail sales in the U.S. grew on average by 15.1% annually while total retail sales grew by 3.8%.
North America’s leading online retailers increased their worldwide online sales by 17.6% in 2018. Even without Amazon bringing up the average by booking 20% growth in 2018, the rest of the 2019 Internet Retailer Top 1000 would have increased their ecommerce sales by 16.6%. The industry continues to evolve thanks to fast-growing online-only retailers such as Wayfair, Nectar Sleep, Casper and Hubble.
