The retailer increased its digital sales for the sixth consecutive quarter after four straight with year-over-year declines for its entire fiscal 2023.

Costco Wholesale Corp. ecommerce sales grew at more than double the rate of total sales in its fiscal Q2 2025, which ended Feb. 16.

Costco sales grew to $62.53 billion in its fiscal Q2. That’s a 9.1% increase over $57.33 in the year-ago period. In the U.S., Costco comparable sales grew 8.3% year over year.

Operating income also grew in the quarter, to $2.32 billion from $2.06 billion the prior year.

Consumers shopped 5.7% more frequently in the quarter compared to Q2 the year before. Along with that, average order value (AOV) grew 1% globally and 2.6% in the U.S.

Looking ahead, CEO Ron Vachris said he expects foreign exchange to negatively impact the retailer. Given the shifting policies surrounding U.S. imposed tariffs, it’s “difficult” to predict how they will impact Costco, he said.

About a third of Costco sales in the U.S. are imported from other countries, Vachris said. Less than half of those are items that come from Canada, Mexico and China, he added.

Costco is No. 7 in the Top 2000 Database. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the largest online retailers in North America by their annual ecommerce sales. It’s also the fourth-largest Mass Merchant in the database.

Costco ecommerce sales Q2

In its fiscal Q2 2025, Costco ecommerce sales grew more than 20% year over year for the third time since the retailer’s fiscal Q3 2021.

Costco ecommerce sales grew 20.9% in Q2. It was the sixth consecutive quarter that Costco increased ecommerce sales after four straight with year-over-year declines for its entire fiscal 2023.

Costco’s new warehouse tool in its app, which allows members to view local warehouse item availability and prices, had more than 43 million visits in the quarter, said chief financial officer Gary Millerchip.

For the first time, Millerchip said, Costco sent out multiple versions of its digital multi-vendor mailers. It personalized those different versions to members based on their previous shopping behavior.

“We still have a lot of work to do in this area and are excited about the potential to improve the member experience through more relevant targeted messages and experiences,” Millerchip said. “While strength in bullion was a meaningful tailwind to ecommerce sales, home furnishings, small electrics, hardware and sporting goods were a few of the other departments that grew double-digits year over year.”

Costco Logistics also marked a record holiday season in the retailer’s fiscal Q2, Millerchip said. It completed more than 500,000 deliveries while growing share in “big and bulky” items.

Costco Next, the retailer’s marketplace, also had record holiday sales, he said, not quantifying the amount. The marketplace is approaching 100 vendor sites and “significantly grew” AOV in the quarter, he added.

How many members does Costco have?

Costco ended its Q2 with 78.4 million paid household members. That’s 6.8% more than the prior year’s Q2. It’s also an increase from 77.4 million in Q1.

The retailer also grew its number of cardholders 6.6% year over year to 140.6 million.

Additionally, Costco finished its Q2 with 36.9 million paid executive memberships. That marks 9.1% growth over Q2 the year before. It’s also more than the 36.4 million executive members in Q1.

Worldwide, 90.5% of members renewed their memberships in Q2. That figure was higher in the U.S., where it was 93%.

Executive members now represent 47.1% of Costco paid members and 73.8% of worldwide sales.

Costco membership fee income accounted for $1.19 billion in Q2 revenue. That’s 7.4% growth (or $82 million more) than the prior year’s Q2.
