Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was a year in which U.S. consumers learned to do many things in ways that avoided coming into direct contact with others—and shopping was no exception.

Business meetings became video conferences. Going to the movies transformed into virtual watch parties. And picking up products at stores evolved into curbside pickup or delivery. Consumers demanded more contact-free options in 2020, and retailers scrambled to provide them. A good example is an explosion in curbside pickup services in the months after the pandemic.

As of February 2021, 50.7% of the 211 retail chains in the 2020 Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000, offered curbside pickup for orders placed online, up from just 6.6% in April 2020, shortly after the pandemic started to hit the United States.

What’s more, as of February,68.7%, of retail chains in the Top 1000 offered buy online pick up in store (BOPIS), up from 54.0% in April 2020.
