The new same-day delivery program will include “hundreds of thousands of products," Macy’s says. A previous same-day delivery program was more limited.

Macy’s Inc. will test free same-day delivery on orders of $75 or more for online shoppers in 30 major markets nationwide, the retailer says.

Macy’s (No. 5 in the Internet Retailer 2019 Top 500) says it will run the pilot program for a limited time starting Oct. 1, but it does not specify when it will end. Macy’s says the same-day delivery program makes it the first department store chain to provide the service without requiring consumers to pay a membership fee.

In 2014, Macy’s launched same-day delivery in five markets featuring a limited selection of products. Macy’s says the new service will utilize “an enhanced technology infrastructure” now in place. The same technology also powers the retailer’s buy online pick up in store and buy online ship-to-store services. The new same-day delivery program will include “hundreds of thousands of products,” Macy’s says.

Once the free limited-time offer ends, same-day delivery will revert to its original terms. Purchases totaling $75 or more will then be delivered the same day for an $8 fee per order.

Macy’s reported the fiscal second quarter ending Aug. 3 was the retailer’s 40th consecutive quarter of double-digit ecommerce growth, but it did not disclose exact figures. Sales made via mobile apps is the fastest-growing sales channel, according to CEO Jeff Gennette in a call with investors transcribed by Seeking Alpha.
