Pinterest Inc. has hired Jeremy King, Walmart Inc.’s executive vice president and chief technology officer of Walmart U.S. and U.S. ecommerce. His last day at the retail giant will be March 29, according to an internal company memo sent to all Walmart associates on Wednesday.

King will report to Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann and lead Pinterest’s team that’s responsible for powering the visual discovery engine.

The departure comes as Walmart is rapidly growing its ecommerce business; the retail giant’s U.S. online sales last year grew 40%. Walmart, No. 3 in in the Internet Retailer 2018 Top 1000, attributes the ecommerce growth to expanded grocery pickup and delivery, along with its rapidly growing assortment of products on Walmart.com.

King has played a major role in building out Walmart’s omnichannel initiatives. Walmart was the top-ranked retailer in Internet Retailer’s 2019 Omnichannel Report, with the most omnichannel features and strong execution. And, at the end of 2018, the retailer had 1,000 pickup locations for its online grocery orders and almost 800 delivery locations. By the end of the next fiscal year, it plans to have 3,100 pickup points and 1,600 delivery locations for its grocery program.

King joined Walmart nearly eight years ago as chief technology and senior vice president at what was then called @WalmartLabs (it is now referred to as Walmart Labs).

“During his first few years at Walmart, he built out an engineering and product organization focused on reimagining the platform for our eCommerce engine, while also leading Walmart Labs through 10+ acquisitions, the opening of four new tech offices and, establishing the organization as a user of, and contributor to, the open source community,” according to the memo, which was sent by Greg Foran, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. and Marc Lore, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. ecommerce. “The operational decisions made during that time were key to the success of our technology team and led to more agile ways of working, transparent tool sets, product-focused road maps and a robust patent program.”

Over the past two years, King’s role evolved to “power” the retailer’s U.S. ecommerce platform, as well as its stores. His replacement will assume a similar role, a spokesman says.

While Walmart looks for King’s replacement, Fiona Tan, the retailer’s senior vice president of customer technology of Walmart Labs, will handle some of his work as a liaison for technology and Walmart U.S. and U.S. ecommerce leadership.
