Walmart says the branded Advance Auto Parts shop, which will debut in the first half of 2019, will complement its already large assortment of auto parts and services.

Automotive parts retailer Advance Auto Parts Inc. is setting up shop on Walmart.com. Walmart Inc., No. 3 in the Internet Retailer 2018 Top 1000, plans to launch an Advance Auto Parts-branded specialty store on its website in the first half of 2019.

Walmart says the branded shop will complement its already large assortment of auto parts and services. “This is really about bringing [Advance Auto Parts’] expertise and catalog assortment to Walmart.com,” a spokeswoman for Walmart told Internet Retailer. Walmart.com ranks No. 3 for organic traffic volume for the term “tires,” for example, according to an Internet Retailer analysis of SimilarWeb traffic data.

Any order placed on the specialty shop on Walmart.com will be fulfilled by Advance Auto Parts. The auto parts retailer will handle product returns from the specialty shop as well, the spokeswoman says.

The biggest piece of the new specialty shop, the spokeswoman said, is that Walmart and Advance Auto Parts will be working together to “explore new fulfillment options,” which will roll out in installments over the course of 2019. Advance Auto Parts items purchased on Walmart.com will eventually be available for same-day pickup at Walmart stores or at one of Advance Auto Parts’ nearly 5,000 U.S. stores.

“Partnering with Walmart enables us to share our extensive product offering and trusted advice with an increased number of do-it-yourself customers and supports our long-term strategic objectives,” says Tom Greco, president and CEO at Advance Auto Parts.

Based on its online sales, Advance Auto Parts ranks No. 97 in the Top 1000, making it the largest automotive parts online retailer of the 27 retailers ranked in that category, ahead of AutoZone Inc. (No. 122), Pep Boys (No. 126) and Tire Rack Inc. (No. 134).

Walmart declined to disclose the terms of the deal with the auto parts retailer but likened it to that of the Lord & Taylor branded flagship shop. Walmart in May launched a Lord & Taylor branded section of Walmart.com with more than 125 upscale fashion brands available for purchase. As with Advance Auto Parts, Lord & Taylor fulfills all orders placed on its store on Walmart.com.

Walmart also has been busy acquiring companies and making deals to further flesh out its offerings. Since August 2016, Walmart has acquired seven online retailers; including plus-size woman’s fashion retailer Eloquii and intimates retailer Bare Necessities, which were both acquired in October. Walmart in August opened a Premium Outlet Store on its site curated by outdoor gear and apparel retailer Moosejaw and recently announced a partnership with U.S. movie studio Metro Goldwyn Mayer to create content with its video-on-demand service Vudu. Thanks to many of these efforts, Walmart expects e-commerce sales to grow 35% in 2019, the retailer said Tuesday ahead of its shareholder meeting.

“We want Walmart to be the destination for customers no matter what they shop for,” the Walmart spokeswoman says.
