Lowe’s, Jet.com, eBay, Houzz and Build.com unveil their augmented reality features using Google’s ARCore today at Shoptalk.

A number of online retailers unveiled their augmented reality features on Google’s ARCore platform on Tuesday at Shoptalk.

The ARCore software development kit (SDK) gives developers the tools to create augmented reality features in Android apps, making augmented reality accessible to more than 100 million Android global smartphone devices via 12 different smartphone models, according to Google. As of December 2017, more than 45% of U.S. smartphone consumers own a device running the Android operating system, according to digital measurement firm comScore Inc.

Augmented reality allows shoppers to view to-scale objects on their mobile screens. For example, a shopper can see what a sofa looks like in her living room, if it coordinates with her other furniture and if it fits where she wants it to go—all through the camera lens on her smartphone.

Home furnishings platform and marketplace Houzz, for example, has had its “View in My Room 3-D” augmented reality features since May 2017 with its iOS app. Less than a year later, 2 million shoppers have used the feature, and Houzz announced today that its 3-D feature is now available in its Android app via ARCore. The reason it is expanding the program is simple: Houzz finds that consumers who use View in My Room 3-D are 11 times more likely to make a purchase. Houzz is No. 10 in the Internet Retailer 2018 Online Marketplaces database.

Similarly, home improvement retailers Lowe’s Cos. Inc. (No. 25 in the Internet Retailer 2017 Top 1000) and Build.com Inc. (No. 72) have had increases in average order values when shoppers view their products in 3-D compared with when shoppers don’t—104% for Lowe’s and a 64% increase in AOV for Build.com. Lowe’s new feature with ARCore lets shoppers view the retailer’s spring catalog of products in augmented reality.

Jet.com, which is owned by Walmart Inc. (No. 3), is using ARCore for shoppers to view electronics in the context of their home.

Marketplace eBay Inc. (No. 4 in the marketplaces database) is taking a different approach with using augmented reality. With eBay’s “Which Box” feature, eBay allows marketplace sellers to use AR to visualize how large of a box it needs to ship a product.
