The 1,000th pickup location will open in the Seattle area as the online grocery battle builds.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open its 1,000th online grocery pickup location in a very strategic location: the Seattle area, hometown of rival Amazon.com Inc., No. 1 in the Internet Retailer 2017 Top 500.

Walmart (No. 3) is letting customers in that area order food online and then retrieve items at their local store without leaving their cars.

Walmart also will give away Google Home connected devices to the first 250 customers who use the free pickup service, a business that the company has expanded aggressively over the past year. It’s aiming to counter a push by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos into the supermarket business. The e-commerce behemoth purchased Whole Foods Market last month and has been building out its grocery delivery offering.

In August, Walmart expanded its same-day delivery option for online grocery orders to two more cities through a program with ride-hailing service Uber. Walmart now offers the service in four cities through its Uber arrangement, plus two more cities through its own delivery system.
