Amazon headlines from the week ending Sept. 11.

Amazon.com Inc. is the No. 1 e-retailer in North America and Europe by sales, and is rapidly expanding its presence globally. It keeps its more than 180,000 part- and full-time employees busy innovating new services and improving the ones it has. This is a digest of Amazon’s latest moves for the week ending Sept. 11.

New hire: Christine Bader joins Amazon as its director of corporate responsibility. For several years she was an adviser to the United Nations on business and human rights and for a decade worked for BP plc, which helped lead to her writing the book “The Evolution of a Corporate Idealist: When Girl Meets Oil” (yes, it’s available Amazon).

The Fire goes out: Amazon has stopped manufacturing it’s poorly received Fire phone and says it will not be making new ones.

First Fresh, now hot: Amazon began offering Prime members in Seattle delivery of food ordered from dozens of area restaurants. Food must be ordered through the Amazon Prime Now mobile app. Seattle, Amazon’s home town, is also where Amazon in 2007 first tested AmazonFresh, its e-grocery delivery service.

Jeff Bezos takes a top spot: While not Vanity Fair’s cover boy—Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg got that—the consumer magazine ranked Bezos No. 3 in its 2015 “New Establishment” lineup of “important visionaries, investors and cultural leaders.” (Zuckerberg is No. 1 and Uber’s Travis Kalanick is No. 2.) Bezos might find plenty to talk about with other e-commerce executives also among the named leaders. Others on the list are Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos of Netflix Inc., Hugo Barra and Lei Jun of China’s Xiaomi smartphone empire, global luxury apparel e-retailer Yoox CEO Federico Marchetti, Alibaba Group Holding’s chairman Jack Ma and actress Jessica Alba, for her leadership at The Honest Company Inc., which she co-founded three years ago. All are companies listed in Internet Retailer’s regional research guides by their e-commerce sales.
