The retail chain is adding 70,000 seasonal employees to its stores, and some will be charged with fulfilling online orders.

Target Corp. is beefing up its e-commerce fulfillment center and in-store staffing ahead of the holidays.

Target, No. 22 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide, will hire 7,500 seasonal employees for its distribution and fulfillment centers in addition to 70,000 temporary employees it will be hiring to work in its 1,795 U.S. stores. According to Top500Guide.com, Target has seven e-commerce fulfillment centers.

This is the first year Target has announced the number of seasonal fulfillment and distribution center employees it will hire. A Target spokeswoman says the company hired 6,500 distribution and fulfillment center employees for the holidays last year, so the 7,500 figure represents a year-over-year growth of 15.4%. The 70,000 store employees figure is in line with its seasonal hiring figures over the past three years.

An unspecified number of those 70,000 in-store employees will be help Target fulfill online orders in-store. Target chief operating officer John Mulligan told analysts on the retail chain’s Q2 2016 earnings call, held Aug. 17, that Target will have employees in 300 stores dedicated to fulfilling online orders. Those employees will wear white shirts that say “order pickup” on them in contrast to the traditional Target store employee uniform of a red shirt and khaki pants.

Target’s stores are expected to be an integral part of its online success this holiday season. Target says about 30% of Target.com sales are fulfilled by a store, either through order pickup or ship from store.
