PayPal Holdings Inc., the online payment system, is now accepted at 712 of the 1000 online retailers ranked in Internet Retailers’ 2019 Top 1000. The Top 1000 is a ranking of the largest online retailers in North America, ranked by ecommerce sales.

PayPal is the fifth-most popular payment method accepted with the Top 1000 retailers. Of the 712 retailers, eight of the top 10 accept PayPal and 88 also accept PayPal credit in addition to PayPal.

Originally founded in late 1998 under the name Confinity, PayPal has become a leader in payment processing for online retailers. PayPal was acquired by online marketplace eBay Inc. in 2002, but in 2015 eBay spun off PayPal and then split with the company in 2018, making PayPal an independent corporation with over 200 million businesses accepting it around the world.

Currently, PayPal is available in more than 200 markets around the world and allows consumers and retailers to receive money in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds in 56 and consumers can hold a balance in their PayPal accounts in 25 different currencies, according to their website.

Internet Retailer tracks which payment options are offered on retailers’ websites and mobile apps. Of the payment options tracked, the most popular form retailers accept online is Visa, with 980 of the retailers accepting the card. Following Visa is MasterCard (971 retailers), American Express (958), Discover Card (896), and then PayPal. Three retailers in the Top 1000 don’t have payment options available.

The most payment options accepted at any single retailer is 15 by 1-800-FLOWERS (No. 78 in the Top 1000). Walmart (No. 3), Best Buy (No. 13) and Newegg Inc. (No. 30) all accept 14.

Of the Top 10 retailers in the Top 1000, Walmart accepts 14 payment options and Amazon (No. 1), Otto Group (No.6) and Staples Inc. (No. 8) all accept 11.

PayPal, part of eBay Inc., said today that 23 national retailers now accept PayPal  payments inside their stores. Separately, the eBay Inc. payments arm also announced a new mobile ordering test involving a California store operated by beverage retailer Jamba Juice.

PayPal says consumers can pay through it via payment terminals inside some 18,000 retail locations.  Consumers pay by either entering the same login and password they use for PayPal online.  Shoppers also can swipe one of three payment cards co-branded by PayPal and MasterCard.

“Delivering valuable digital and mobile payments is alive and thriving, and consumers all over the U.S. will now start seeing PayPal more where they shop every day, including the grocery store and at the gas pump,” says Don Kingsborough, vice president of retail services for PayPal.

PayPal has yet to reveal the last two retailers.

For the Jamba Juice test, PayPal will enable consumers with iPhones to use their PayPal apps to place orders for pickup at the Emeryville CA store in the San Francisco bay area. Jamba Juice keeps its headquarters in that city. Consumers can use the app to select a pickup time and to pay through their PayPal accounts; those consumers can bypass the line inside the store when picking up their orders.
