When the top online retailers launched

There aren’t many young e-retailers in the Top 1000, but those that are in there show some serious growth. The median launch year for the Top 1000 is the turn of the millennium.

It’s intuitive that a retail company grows fastest during its first few years in business, when it just begins tapping into its potential customer base and shoppers are most intrigued by the new offerings. But the drop off in year-over-year growth between those companies that are just a few years old and those that are past their first decade in e-commerce is staggering. Companies in the Internet Retailer Top 1000 who have been in business just 3 years grew a median of nearly 150% in 2017, while those with e-commerce operations that are now 11 years old grew a median of just 15%.
