Nearly half of all revenue generated by Internet Retailer 2018 Top 1000 U.S. companies in 2017 went to retailers based in just two states: Washington and California. However, those two states tell very different stories about how companies are making money online.

California has the most Top 1000 retailers, with 178 of the 900 U.S.-based retailers headquartered there. It’s a diverse group, with retailers from every category Internet Retailer tracks represented. It has many apparel, housewares and sporting goods retailers, and big electronics companies like Apple Inc. (No. 2) and Monoprice Inc. (No. 230) are based in the Golden State.
