How much Birchbox sells online

The online cosmetics retailer, No. 204 in the Internet Retailer Top 1000, will sell its products in Walgreens stores after the drugstore company purchased a minority stake in Birchbox. The news comes after investment firm Viking Global took a majority stake in Birchbox in May for $15 million. Birchbox has raised $86.9 million to date, according to Crunchbase.

Birchbox’s business model is based on customers paying $10 a month for a box of beauty care samples. But that doesn’t make the company money, and its one reason why Birchbox has raised nearly $90 million. The company makes money when customers buy full-sized versions of the samples on Birchbox.com. But with large beauty competitors such as Sephora and Ulta investing in e-commerce and omnichannel capabilities, it’s been a tough feat for Birchbox. Moving into Walgreens stores may help Birchbox get in front of more customers willing to pay for full-sized beauty products from them.

In 2017, Birchbox sold an estimated $209 million online. This chart tracks its growth since launching in 2010. To view this data you must be a Digital Commerce 360 Premium Member. If you’re a member, sign in. To learn more about Premium Memberships, click here
