The Mayo Clinic is reporting another big year of growth for its digital and mobile healthcare programs, and progress rolling out its $1 billion electronic health records plan.

Mayo now has more than 1 million patients registered to use its digital health portal, Mayo says in its just released annual report.

Through its Center for Connected Care, its mobile and digital healthcare delivery program, Mayo also conducted more 3,000 digital doctor visits. IN 2017?

Mobile health also continues to grow. The Mayo app, available for both Apple and Android devices, has now been downloaded by more than 1 million users, and patients used the app to book 19,000 appointments.

In addition to booking an appointment, Mayo patients can also use the app to check appointment schedules, view test results, radiology images and exams; access and pay bills; communicate with providers; book a telehealth visit within an hour for common ailments that don’t require an in-person visit; sync health data with Apple Health and get appointment updates on an Apple watch.

Mayo, which delivered treatment to 1.3 million patients in 2017, also spent $714 million of a planned $1 billion update last year to a new universal electronic health records system from Epic Systems Corp.

Mayo operates a sprawling national healthcare system that consists of more than 70 hospitals and clinics across Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Georgia. Mayo Clinic also operates several medical schools including Mayo Medical School, the Mayo Graduate School, and the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and Mayo School of Health Sciences.

When complete in three years, the electronic health records system will have consolidated three disparate medical records systems onto a new Epic system that 45,000 Mayo employees ultimately will use.

“The project aims to enhance services, accelerate innovation and enable Mayo Clinic to provide better care for patients,” Mayo says. Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin went online with the new system in 2017. Mayo’s campuses in Arizona, Florida and at its Rochester facility will be added in 2018.
