Sporting goods retail chains have been struggling to grow in-store sales. Sports Authority, Eastern Mountain Sports, Sports Chalet, Golfsmith and Gander Mountain all filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the last year. Dick’s Sporting Goods benefited from the 2016 bankruptcies of competitors, and bolstered sales by scooping up assets of Sports Authority and Golfsmith. In Q4 2016, Dick’s converted three Sports Authority stores into Dick’s locations, and acquired 30 Golfsmith stores. The SportsAuthority.com URL directs shoppers to DicksSportingGoods.com and Golfsmith.com to Dick’s-owned GolfGalaxy.com.
