Steve Martinez had been working as a consultant for School Specialty.

Educational supplies retailer School Specialty Inc. has hired Steve Martinez to be its new chief information officer overseeing e-commerce, among other areas.

It’s a new position for School Specialty, No. 221 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide. While the position is new to the retailer, Martinez is not, having recently worked as an information technology consultant for School Specialty over the past several months. He has spent the past 18 months as chief strategy officer for tech consultancy Execution Specialists Group LLC.

In announcing his hire, School Specialty credited Martinez with overseeing improvements to the company’s customer relationship management (CRM) system.

“Working with Steve, I can tell you firsthand that he brings incredible talent, leadership and commitment,” CEO Joseph Yorio says. “I am glad that he will continue to play a crucial role in our organization. I have every bit of confidence that he will serve the company well.”

According to Top500Guide.com, School Specialty generated an Internet Retailer-estimated $124.7 million in online sales in 2015, up 1% from $123.5 million in 2014.
