A pair of beverage industry veterans take over the top marketing spots at Target and Toys R Us.

A pair of major retail chains have hired new heads of marketing.

Rick Gomez will take over as chief marketing officer at Target Corp., No. 22 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide. It’s a promotion within Target for Gomez, who had been senior vice president of marketing since joining Target from brewer MillerCoors in April 2013. According to LinkedIn, he joined MillerCoors in July 2009 from PepsiCo, where he was most recently served as chief marketing officer of the company’s hydration brands. He replaces Jeff Jones, who left in August to become president of ridesharing at Uber Technologies Inc.

Target CEO Brian Cornell praised Gomez’s ability to adapt. “Rick is a very talented marketer whose leadership will be critical as we continue to refine our marketing efforts and reach our guests in new, relevant ways,” Cornell said in announcing the promotion. “[He] has a deep understanding of the retail marketplace and brings an analytical, strategic and collaborative approach to the work he leads to reach our guests and drive the business.”

Meanwhile, Toys R Us Inc. (No. 35) plucked another PepsiCo veteran to be its new global chief marketing officer.

Carla Hassan becomes the toy retailer’s new head of marketing on Feb. 20. She has spent nearly 13 years at PepsiCo, most recently as senior vice president of brand management. Prior to that role, she served as PepsiCo’s chief marketing officer of its Middle East Africa region, and Toys R Us CEO Dave Brandon says such global experience will serve her well in her new role.

“Carla not only has exceptional experience from both a global brand and leadership perspective, she brings with her a passion and reputation for change,” Brandon says. “I expect to see her immediate positive impact on our marketing programs and ability to connect with today’s consumers and drive traffic into our bricks and mortar stores and our web store.”
