The addition of NetSuite gives Oracle a shot at taking on Amazon, Google and Microsoft in more areas of cloud software sold to businesses.

Oracle Corp.’s completion this week of its deal to buy e-commerce software firm NetSuite Inc. marked just one—though perhaps the most notable—effort by Oracle to expand in cloud-based software for businesses.

It’s a tall order with Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Microsoft Corp. deeply entrenched in the market. Tens of thousands of businesses are loyal to Amazon Web Services, and it won’t be easy for Oracle to erode Amazon’s lead in the market for public cloud computing.
