CVS Health is taking a pilot project for mobile payment for prescriptions and rolling it out nationally.

In April, CVS added CVS Pay to its pharmacy mobile app. CVS Pay gives users the ability to refill prescriptions, manage multiple prescriptions and pick up and pay for prescriptions all within an Apple or Android app.

CVS Pays also lets customers use the mobile app as a single scan at checkout in a CVS drug store and to pick up and pay for a prescription from a drive-through lane.

“We know that our customers lead busy lives, so our digital efforts are focused on making it easier for them to do simple but important things like picking up prescriptions. That’s why we are thrilled to launch CVS Pay to CVS Pharmacy app users nationwide,” says CVS senior vice president and chief digital officer Brian Tilzer.

CVS is rolling out CVS Pay with multiple card payment options. Customers can begin using CVS Pay by adding a credit or debit card to the CVS pharmacy app. They can also add their health savings account and flexible savings account cards.

At the store, an associate will scan a bar code from the customer’s app, ring up the purchases, let the customer choose a payment method from those stored within the app, and then process the payment, CVS says. All verifications for prescriptions and payment take place directly in the app.

CVS is intent on growing its mobile healthcare base, the company says. CVS mobile app downloads have increased 150% in the past year, although CVS didnt provide specifics. 18.8 million shoppers also have enrolled in the chain retailers text messaging program and in 2015 CVS sent 300 million prescription text messages reminders to customers and generated 13 million mobile visits per month, CVS says.

CVS Pay makes picking up prescriptions and shopping at CVS Pharmacy more convenient, Tilzer says.
