Jason Goldberger’s duties will be split between Target’s chief information officer and the chief merchandising officer.

(Bloomberg)—Target Stores Inc. chief digital officer Jason Goldberger, tasked with helping the retailer take on rival Amazon.com Inc., has left the company as it overhauls its online operations.

Goldberger’s duties will be split between chief information officer Mike McNamara, who will oversee digital strategy and platforms, and chief merchandising officer Mark Tritton, who will take over the pricing and promotions, the company said Friday. Target is No. 22 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide; Amazon is No. 1.

“Taking this body of work in a new direction will help advance our efforts in these key areas during a pivotal time for Target,” CEO Brian Cornell in a statement. “I have complete confidence that Mike and Mark’s leadership will have an immediate and positive impact on the team and the business.”

It’s the second high-profile departure at Target in as many months. Chief marketing officer Jeff Jones left in August to become the second in command at Uber Technologies Inc. Goldberger, the digital chief, had been at the company for nearly four years. Prior to coming to Target, Goldberger worked at Amazon, home furinshings e-retailer Hayneedle Inc. and Gilt Group Holdings Inc., part of Hudson’s Bay Co. (No. 75 in the Top 500).

Target’s website had been a bright spot for the company, with web sales growing 13.4% last quarter while total comparable sales fell 1.1%. Still, Target has been dwarfed by Amazon’s increasing dominance and faces increasing competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (No. 4), which recently paid $3.3 billion for e-commerce startup and online marketplace Jet.com. Jet in Februrary acquired Hayneedle.
