The electronics and furniture retailer grew its online sales by 33% year-over-year in Q1 2017.

Electronics and furniture retailer hhgregg Appliances Inc. has promoted a company veteran to oversee its growing e-commerce business.

Chris Sutton was named senior vice president of marketing from vice president of marketing. He’ll oversee both e-commerce and marketing. Sutton joined hhgregg in October 2009 as marketing director and has been promoted several times since.

Online sales were a bright spot in an otherwise dim first quarter of fiscal 2017 for hhgregg, No. 246 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide. CEO Bob Riesbeck told analysts on the company’s Q1 earnings call Aug. 4 that online sales grew 33% year over year during the quarter ended June 30. He didn’t specify a dollar figure and the company does not break out online sales in its quarterly earnings report.

That 33% year-over-year online sales growth came in the face of declining overall sales. Hhgregg reported net sales of $423.6 million, down 4.0% from $441.1 million during the same period last year.

Riesbeck told analysts that hhgregg has had great success bringing online shoppers into its stores and then getting them to buy additional items once there.

“Approximately half of our sales purchased online are picked up in-store,” he said, according to a transcript from Seeking Alpha. “Many customers that buy in our stores start on our website and go in-store to get the customer service of our associates and complete their transaction. This also allows us an opportunity to increase the average sales transaction.”

Sutton’s hiring was one of a handful of recent personnel moves made by hhgregg. The retailer also promoted Sam Johnson to chief retail officer from senior vice president of stores and Kevin Kovacs to chief financial officer from vice president/controller.
