Anthem Inc., the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross and one the nations biggest healthcare insurance companies, has rolled out a series of new digital healthcare initiatives that give plan enrollees new ways to conduct digital doctor visits and calculate dental costs.

Anthem, which covers nearly 72 million plan enrollees in 28 states, is rolling out a digital doctor scheduling and office visit service in select markets including California, Colorado and Ohio. In Colorado, Anthem is working with Health Management Corp., which runs the Live Health Online telemedicine program to cover mental health visits.

Under the program, Anthem plan enrollees can use a mobile device or desktop computer to meet with a licensed mental health professional. Plan enrollees can schedule a digital therapy session from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Sessions are typically booked up to four days in advance, but immediate sessions can be scheduled, Anthem says. There is a co-pay to use the new online mental health service that typically will be about $30 but will vary based upon the individuals coverage.

Common issues for online mental health sessions typically include stress, anxiety, depression, relationship and parenting issues, grief and coping with an illness of a loved one. Anthem is rolling out the digital counseling service first in Colorado. A primary goal is to reach more patients, especially those living in remote areas who may not otherwise have access to a mental health service. 18% of American adults suffer from mental illness and another 8% from substance abuse, but 20% of Americans say they were unable to get the mental health support they need, says Mike Ramseier, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Colorado.

Anthem didnt say when the program will roll out to all its states, but the program also is available now for California Care patients covered by Anthem Blue Cross, the company says. Covered California is California’s health insurance exchange.

In select markets, including Ohio, Anthem is partnering with big healthcare systems to give plan enrollees more options to conduct a digital doctor visit with a physician inside their network. In Cleveland, Anthem is working with the Cleveland Clinic, which operates nine regional hospitals and 18 full-service family health centers throughout Northeast Ohio and in Florida, Nevada, Toronto and Abu Dhabi.

Under the agreement Anthem plan members that also are enrolled in Cleveland Clinics healthcare system, can download an iPhone, iPad or Android app from Live Health Online or visit LiveHealthOnline.com to locate and then schedule a digital doctor visit with a Cleveland Clinic physician or nurse for a non-emergency condition such as a cold or muscle strain. In our fast-paced lives, patients are looking for options to be able to address their health care needs in a timely and cost-effective manner, says Dr. Matt Faiman, medical director of Express Care Online at Cleveland Clinic.

The Cleveland Clinic conducts more than five million patient visits per year and has a staff of over 5,000 doctors and healthcare professionals. It will cost a plan member $49 for a digital doctor visit, according to Anthem and Cleveland Clinic. In many circumstances, the alternatives are to use more costly urgent care clinics or emergency rooms, and online care is another option that can be a more convenient and efficient way for patients to access healthcare, Faiman says.

Anthem has been rolling digital doctor visitation services across its areas of coverage since 2014, the company says.

In addition to expanding telehealth Anthem also is pilot testing a new web self-service tool for calculating dental benefits.

The new online dental benefits calculator enables Anthem plan members in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky Nevada and Virginia to determine the cost of a trip to the dentist for procedures such as treatment of gum disease, tooth decay and other reasons.

The calculator also lets plan members view their benefits and co-payment information, find in-network dentists and access a library of content on better oral healthcare.

We know consumers are concerned about their dental health and what it will cost, says Mike Malouf, president of Anthems dental business. We are simplifying healthcare so that our members can focus on their health.

Anthem has yet to say when it will roll out the dental benefits calculator to all its coverage areas.

In December, Anthem signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cigna Corp. in a deal valued at $54.2 billion. The deal is expected to be final in the next six months but a firm date has yet to be released.
