Staples Inc. launched this week same-day delivery of online orders placed at Staples.com, the office supplies company’s site for small businesses and consumers. It will expand the service, called Staples Rush, in the fourth quarter to the large businesses it serves through StaplesAdvantage.com, says Faisal Masud, executive vice president, global e-commerce.

The same-day delivery service is part of a strategy Staples announced last month to sell more to small as well as large companies, and across more product lines, following its failed merger with Office Depot Inc. Staples is No. 21 in the B2B E-Commerce 300, which ranks companies on their annual business-to-business web sales; Office Depot is No. 42.

Staples caters to consumers and businesses with fewer than 10 employees through Staples.com, to small and mid-size businesses through Quill.com, and to large businesses and StaplesAdvantage.com. Quill and StaplesAdvantage operate as part of Staples’ North American Commercial Division. Staples expects to roll out the same-day delivery service for Quill.com early next year, a spokesman says.

With the new service, customers in Boston, Dallas and the Manhattan borough of New York City will be able to receive delivery by 7 p.m. of orders placed online by 3 p.m. Staples will roll out the service later this year to additional cities, including Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle. Some restrictions apply according to type and size of products.
