The Eternal City now has a digital tour guide.

Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, the Vatican State’s hospitality organization, recently launched an app, called Iubitinera, for pilgrims visiting Rome and the Vatican.

The iOS and Android app is specifically geared for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which runs from December 2015 to November 2016. Pope Francis announced this time period as a holy year of mercy, in which Catholics “are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time.” Opera Romana expects 25 to 40 million pilgrims and visitors to Rome during this time period. The name Iubitinera comes from the Latin words Iubileum Itinera, which roughly means routes of the jubilee, says Monsignor Liberio Andreatta, CEO of Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi.

The app, which is in both English and Italian, enables travelers to build itineraries, see where landmarks are on a map, and learn historical and cultural information about these points of interest. The free app has more than 60 points of interest, including works of art, historic monuments and items of religious or cultural significance.

All of the app’s features work offline, says Massimo Morielli, Accenture Digital lead for Italy, central Europe and Greece. Accenture Mobility, a division of technology consulting firm Accenture Digital, built the app. Even though the Iubitinera app is offline it can still use location-based services via Wi-Fi and GPS. For example, a traveler who walks past a significant landmark can receive a smartphone alert when she walks past it.

“In this way the app works as a digital map, guide and information point,” Andreatta says.

A travel app that works offline is helpful for travelers who do not have a data plan within the country they are traveling. For example, travel planning and booking website TripAdvisor LLC also has features in its app that allow travelers to download and access without an Internet connection a city guide that includes ratings, reviews and maps.

The Iubitinera app also provides pilgrims with the four official routes of the Jubilee: the Papal Route, the Pilgrim Route, the Route of Mercy and the Marian Route. Travelers can see a map of all the landmarks along each of these routes, the distance between them and their meaning.

“Jubilee routes are one of the most important heritages of this extraordinary jubilee,” Andreatta says. “The app has been realized in order to improve the visit and pilgrimage experience.”

Although the app is geared toward this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the app’s content will still be relevant to travelers in future years, as the points of interest will remain worthwhile, Andreatta says.

The app launched in Italy in December 2015 and globally on May 18, 2016. The app has thousands of downloads and hundreds of people were involved in its development, Morielli says. Opera Romana would not comment on the cost to build it nor how long it took.

Opera Romana is letting travelers know about the app via press conferences, social media, and advertising on buses and at tourist information points in Rome.
