A strong U.S. dollar contributed to a drop in electronic and total sales for Tech Data Corp. for its fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2016.

The company, a distributor of electronics and other I.T. products to more than 100,000 customers, including resellers and retailers, generated $12.66 billion in electronic sales for the year, down 4.7% from $13.28 billion the year prior, a spokeswoman says. Electronic sales, which Tech Data defines as sales through its e-commerce site, TechData.com, and through electronic data interchange, or EDI, accounted for 48% of total sales, the same percentage as during the prior fiscal year.

Total sales, meanwhile, also declined 4.7%, to $26.38 billion from $27.67 billion. Sales for the year were flat in the Americas region, which includes the United States where the strong dollar would not impact sales.

The number of orders placed through TechData.com and EDI accounted for 73% of total orders, indicating that the average value is lower for orders placed online than through other means, the spokeswoman adds.

Tech Data declines to comment on the percentage of its sales booked through TechData.com for the recently ended fiscal year. In a prior interview, however, it said sales through its e-commerce site accounted for 20% of total electronic sales, which would put online sales for the recent 12-month period at about $2.5 billion. Tech Data is ranked No. 46 with 2015 e-commerce sales of $2.7 billion in the B2B E-Commerce 300.

For fiscal 2016 ended Jan.31, Tech Data sales increased 1% for its Mobility products category over the prior year. Sales remained the same year over year in Tech Data’s Software and Data Center categories. Sales decreased 1% year over year in Tech Data’s Consumer Electronics and Broadline categories. The Broadline category is Tech Data’s largest, and includes products like tablets, printer supplies and components.

Approximately 105,000 value-added resellers, direct marketers, retailers and corporate resellers located in more than 100 countries throughout North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa comprise Tech Data’s customer base, the company says.

One example of Tech Data’s expanding operations is its June 2015 acquisition of Signature Technology Group Inc., a provider of data center and professional services throughout North America. The company also plans to focus on developing its business in Mexico and Miami, where it runs a Latin America export business.
