In a shrinking market for traditional office supplies like paper and pencils, Staples Inc.’s latest growth strategy is to throw a party. At least that what it wants its business customers to do.

The distributor and retailer has signed an agreement with Party City Holdco Inc., a designer and manufacturer of party supplies, to carry some 1,500 Party City products—like candles, cups and spoons for office birthday parties—to business customers on e-commerce sites Staples.com, Quill.com and StaplesAdvantage.com.

“We are continually adding to our assortment of over a million products in categories beyond office supplies, including facilities and break room, safety supplies and restaurant supplies,” says Greg Nelson, vice president, e-commerce merchandising, at Staples.
