The punk-styled women’s apparel retailer names Sheree Waterson as its new chief executive. Waterson had been Nasty Gal’s president and chief product officer since last February.

Edgy fashion e-retailer Nasty Gal has promoted Sheree Waterson, its president and chief product officer, to chief executive. As part of her promotion she will join the Nasty Gal board of directors.

Founder and former CEO Sophia Amoruso will move into the role of executive chairman, overseeing creative and brand marketing, and leading Nasty Gal’s customer experience both online and offline, the company says.

Waterson joined Nasty Gal, No. 113 in the Internet Retailer 2014 Top 500 Guide, in February 2014 as president and chief product officer. In her short time at the retailer, she oversaw merchandising, design, planning, and production and product assortment. She also helped the former web-only retailer open its first physical store, on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

“In the past 11 months, we have seen the impact of Sheree’s strategic thinking and approach in our product offering and experience,” Amoruso says. “She has established herself as an inspiring leader here at Nasty Gal and I am confident in her ability to execute on our vision.”

Before joining Nasty Gal, Waterson worked at apparel retailer Lululemon Athletica Inc.  (No. 112) as executive vice president and chief product officer from 2008 to 2013. Before that she worked at sports apparel manufacturer Speedo North America as president from 2005 to 2007. Earlier in her career, Waterson worked as vice president of merchandising, women’s, for Levi Strauss & Co. (No. 340).
