Retail veterans Darrell Webb and Michael Amkreutz join the musical instruments retailer.

Major changes at the top are afoot this week for musical instruments retailer Guitar Center.

The retailer announced Monday it has hired former Sports Authority Inc. CEO Darrell Webb as its new president and CEO. On Tuesday, it announced it has hired retail industry veteran Michael Amkreutz away from electronics retailer Systemax Inc. to head up the company’s e-commerce team as executive vice president of marketing, merchandise and e-commerce.

Guitar Center owns Musician’s Friend Inc., which currently ranks No. 56 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. Musician’s Friend operates 10 e-commerce sites, including GuitarCenter.com and MusiciansFriend.com.

Amkreutz had spent the past three years at Systemax, which ranks No. 29 in the Top 500 Guide, where, according to his LinkedIn profile, he had been serving as the company’s chief marketing officer since last December. Prior to that, he had been the vice president of merchandising online with retailer Sears Holdings Corp. (No. 5) and before that vice president of product management at electronics e-retailer Newegg Inc. (No. 17).

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with such a well-respected brand in the music industry,” Amkreutz says. “I look forward to collaborating with the outstanding group of minds at Guitar Center to foster the next batch of big ideas to bring further success to the brand.”

Webb had retired as CEO of Sports Authority (No. 262 in the Top 500) last June, having led the sporting goods retail chain for two years. Webb has also served as CEO of fabrics and crafts retailer Joann Stores as well as working in executive roles with The Kroger Co. and Fred Meyer Inc. Joann.com, the e-commerce arm of Joann Stores, is No. 279 in the Top 500.
