The e-retailer says 1 million products are eligible for same-day delivery to consumers in Toronto and Vancouver.

Amazon.com Inc.’s same-day delivery program has expanded to Canada, where the e-retailer this week enabled consumers in Toronto and Vancouver to place orders as late as noon for delivery by 9 p.m.

Together, those two cities represent just more than 9% of Canada’s total population, going by census estimates from the country’s national statistics agency. At last count, Amazon’s same-day delivery service in the United States covered about 17% of the country’s population and included such cities as Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

“We’re constantly working to speed up delivery times and introduce new services that make our customers’ lives easier,” says Alexandre Gagnon, country manager for Amazon.ca. “With same-day delivery, customers in Toronto and Vancouver can conveniently take care of errands or complete holiday shopping in a day with just a few clicks, receive orders seven days a week and have what they need delivered to their home in a matter of hours.”

Amazon says Canadian online shoppers can receive same-day deliveries for some 1 million eligible products. Members of Amazon’s Prime shipping program pay a C$6.99 ($6.11) per-order shipping fee for the same-day deliveries. Other consumers pay C$11.99 ($10.48) per shipment plus C$1.99 ($1.74) per item for most items, says the e-retailer, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

Amazon’s same-day delivery in Canada comes amid big expectations for that country’s e-commerce growth. A Forrester Research Inc. report from October projects that Canadian e-commerce will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 12.3% through 2019, when Canadians will spend about C$39.9 billion ($35.9 billion) on the web. Online spending in Canada will account for 6% of all retail spending this year, Forrester predicts. In the United States, e-commerce accounts for 6.4% of retail spending, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Commerce Department.

The Canadian same-day delivery launch also follows Amazon’s ongoing tweaking of Prime to make it more attractive to online shoppers. Amazon not only increased the number of Prime-eligible items by 11% in the third quarter, according to estimates, but offered Prime members unlimited photo storage in the Amazon Cloud.
