Founded in 2012, the web-only company sells medical supplies to practitioners, caregivers and consumers.

Customer service features that appeal both to businesses and consumers have helped to build the monthly unique visitor count on DiscountMedicalSupplies.com to roughly 90,000, CEO Dr. Jon Segal says.

August 2014 has been the company’s best month yet since its founding in 2012, as it’s now operating at well over 30% profit margins, Segal says. DiscountMedicalSupplies.com, which operates on the Magento Community Edition e-commerce platform, surpassed $250,000 per month in revenue in December 2013, he says, and the merchant just began selling on the Amazon.com marketplace within the last couple of months. Magento Community is a free open-source e-commerce technology platform from eBay Enterprise, a unit of eBay Inc. Open-source software provides users with access to the core software code for customizing software functionality and features.

The doctor-run e-commerce site sells 40,000 products to doctors’ office, caregivers and consumers, including products for treating diabetic conditions and incontinence, alleviating pain and caring for wounds.

To appeal to the needs of both the B2B customer and retail customers, the home page offers two “storefronts” to choose from: one for practitioners and one for caregivers, patients and the public. Both look similar, with navigation bars on the top and left-hand side, and category pages highlighted in the center. But different products are front-and-center on each section of the site.

DiscountMedicalSupplies also offers live chat with customer service reps, and it displays a toll-free number for calling customer service reps, who are fluent in Spanish as well as English. The site also provides order tracking and same-day delivery. The merchant notes that it sells branded products at 40% to 50% off retail prices, and offers a price-match guarantee.

The web site also features educational content, including webinars and health news designed to appeal to each customer segment. It also links to a blog and several social media sites.

The site also displays a Doctor Trusted Certificate, which contains a written opinion by a medical doctor of the quality standards that DiscountMedicalSupplies.com provides. The certificate, which shows the date it was issued, also lists the name, credentials and e-mail address of the medical doctor. The certificate is provided and hosted online by DoctorTrusted.org Consumer Protection Organization.

“We take the pain out of ordering medical supplies thanks to our excellent prices and user-friendly web site,” Segal says. “Our dedicated customer support staff, all of whom are caregivers themselves, are available to help customers with all their personal questions and concerns.”

Segal, whose background is in chiropractic care, launched DiscountMedicalSupplies.com and DiscountChiropracticSupplies.com in 2012. The company now employs 40 people, mostly practitioners and caregivers themselves.
