Amazon.com Inc. will offer Sunday deliveries in seven cities across the U.K.  The e-retailer, No. 1 in Internet Retailer’s  Europe 500, tested the service in London for four weeks before Christmas. 

“We know customers really appreciated the immediacy of Sunday deliveries during the Christmas period and we were able to deliver thousands more parcels in this way in those four weeks,” says Jamie Stephenson, U.K. director for Amazon Logistics.

Amazon Prime members will receive this additional service at no charge, though the retailer did not reply to a request for comment about how much the service will cost other Amazon customers.  Amazon Prime is a service that offers members two-day free shipping for a flat rate of $79 per year.

Sunday deliveries will be made using the Amazon Logistics service, which operates a number of delivery stations that act as hubs for deliveries in their local areas, according to Amazon. Amazon Logistics then works with regional delivery partners to deliver items directly to customers.

The service will be available in London, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds.  Customers may also benefit from Sunday deliveries when choosing one-day delivery, a service that Amazon Prime members will receive at no additional charge.  Amazon offered no immediate comment about the program.

In the United States, Amazon started offering Sunday deliveries in New York City and Los Angeles last year and announced plans to expand it to “a large portion of the U.S. population,” including Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Phoenix. So far, Amazon has an exclusive deal with the United States Postal Service to deliver packages up to 70 pounds on Sundays.
